Physics 102, Essentials of Physics Winter 2000 Schedule: Tu-Th 9:30-10:50 AM Final Exam: 8 AM, Tuesday, March 14 Instructor: Professor Stephen Hsu, 475 Willamette, hsu@duende.uoregon.edu Office hours: Tu-Th 11-12 AM, or by appointment. Teaching Assistant: Alex Denisov, 261 Willamette, 6-5863, denisov@darkwing.uoregon.edu Webpage: http://duende.uoregon.edu/~hsu/102/ Textbook: Conceptual Physics, P.Hewitt Course Philosophy: The purpose of this course is to promote a deeper understanding of conceptual physics, and science and nature in general. We will always emphasize physical ideas rather than mathematics, although a basic level of mathematics and quantitative thinking will be required. It is important to remember that learning is an interactive process and requires effort on the part of the student. New concepts are only absorbed after concentrated thought and consideration. DO NOT BE AFRAID to ask questions in class! My main purpose as the instructor is to help you learn. My role as someone who assigns you a grade or judges your performance relative to others is secondary and less important. Homework: Your homework consists of three parts. A) Reading. Please read the chapter material BEFORE you come to class. Make notes on the things you find confusing, and feel free to ask me about them during class. B) Problems: These will also be assigned for each chapter. They are due EVERY THURSDAY during the term, starting at the end of the SECOND WEEK. I will drop the LOWEST problem set score when computing your final grade. Please put your problem sets in the TA's box in 261 Willamette. Quizzes: We will have quizzes on three of the Thursdays during the term (see the syllabus for the dates). These will consist of a short problem or problems taken from recent material. DO NOT ASK FOR A MAKEUP QUIZ UNLESS YOU HAVE A MEDICAL EMERGENCY OR PRIOR APPROVAL FROM ME. Exams: There will be a midterm (Thursday, 2/10) and a final exam. The midterm will cover chapters 10-14, and the final will cover the entire quarter, with slightly more emphasis on chapters 15-18. Grades: Your grade will be determined as follows: Homework problems: 30 percent (drop lowest HW score) Quizzes: 20 Midterm: 15 Final: 25 Class participation: 10 (this will be based on your participation in class discussion, etc.) Syllabus (10 weeks) WEEK: 1 (1/6) Read: Ch 10 ; Review concepts from Ph101 Problems: No Homework No Quiz 2 (1/11,13) Read: Ch 10 Problems: Ch10: 1,4,5 QUIZ! on Thursday 3 (1/18,20) Read: Ch 11 Problems: Ch11: 1,3,6 No Quiz 4 (1/25,27) Read: Ch 12 Problems: CH12: 1,2,3,5 QUIZ! on Thursday 5 (2/1,3) Read: Ch13 Problems: Ch13: 1,3,4 No Quiz 6 (2/8,10) Read: Ch 14 Problems: CH 14: 1,2,3,7 MIDTERM!! on Thursday (2/10) 7 (2/15,17) Read: Ch 15 Problems: Ch 15: 1,2,3 No quiz. 8 (2/22,24) Read: Ch 16 Problems: Ch16: 1,2,5 No quiz. 9 (2/29, 3/2) Read: Ch 17 Problems: Ch 17: 3,4,6 QUIZ! on Thursday 10 (3/7,9) Read: Ch 18 Problems: Ch8: 4,6,8 No quiz
